📐 The Ultimate Guide: How to Measure Your Foot for the Perfect Barefoot Shoe

Selecting the correct size is the first step to restoring your foot health. In the world of barefoot footwear, simply knowing your usual shoe size isn't enough; we need precision in centimeters to ensure your toes have the space they deserve.

In this guide, we'll show you how to measure your foot length, width, and type in under 5 minutes.

1. Measure Your Foot LENGTH

Length is measured from the heel to the tip of your longest toe (which isn't always the big toe).

  1. Place a sheet of paper flush against a wall on a flat floor.

  2. Stand on the paper with your heel gently touching the wall. Important! Do this at the end of the day, when your foot is most expanded.

  3. Draw a mark exactly where your longest toe ends (keep the pencil perfectly vertical).

  4. Measure the distance in a straight line from the edge of the paper to your mark.

  5. Repeat with the other foot. It's normal for one to be slightly larger; always use the larger measurement.

💡 Ida Barefoot Tip: To the final result, add between 0.8 cm and 1.2 cm of "wiggle room" to choose your size on our website.

2. Measure the WIDTH (Metatarsal Area)

Width is crucial to know if a shoe last will respect your toes' freedom.

  • Find the widest part of your foot: this is just where your toes begin (metatarsals).

  • Use the outline you drew earlier and measure the straight-line distance from side to side in that area.

  • ⚠️ IMPORTANT! Always use a rigid ruler. A sewing tape measure wraps around the foot and distorts the measurement; we need the linear width of the base.

Is Your Foot Narrow, Medium, or Wide? (Ratio Calculation)

To know what type of last you need, we'll use a simple mathematical formula. You just need to divide your length by your width.

Example: length 25.4 cm and width 9.2 cm ---> 2.7 cm
